BETTY, BOOFF & JOAN

A  Triple Bill of Memory, Laughter, and Connection.

A bold, poignant, and powerfully personal theatrical experience — a four-act work told by three performers. At its core, it is the story of a family — unconventional, and forged not just by blood but by circumstance and choice.

Two Aunties.

One Nephew.

Three Generations - 40.61.85.

Each has a singular past, a lifetime of laughter and ache, and their own truth to share.

Presented with radical simplicity, the work invites audiences into a world of raw intimacy and theatrical precision. The simplicity lies in the absence of elaborate sets, focusing instead on the raw emotions and monologues of the characters. Through the collision of memory, we witness the quiet revelations of lives, both ordinary and extraordinary.

THEMES & CREATIVE INTENT

At its heart, the work is about acceptance — not the tidy kind, but the real kind: complicated, unfinished, and hard-won.

It asks:

  • How do we carry the ones who raised us — and how do we put them down when we need to?

  • How does memory shape our identity, even when it lies?

  • What do we perform to be loved, and what happens when we stop?

  • Can we forgive the past without rewriting it?

  • How do we honour the stories we've hidden — from others and from ourselves?

The work is a gentle revolt against neat endings. It celebrates the mess, the gaps, the silences — and finds meaning in the very act of looking back.

WHY NOW?

In a time when disconnection is epidemic, BETTY, BOOFF & JOAN offers the simplest of remedies: presence. It reminds us that families are not always given — sometimes, they're made. That the past isn't always a weight — sometimes, it's a thread. And that when we listen — really listen — we begin to understand not just others but ourselves. This is a show that doesn't ask for applause. It asks for a breath. A memory. And maybe, just maybe — a little forgiveness.
